Deceased Name: ROBERT M. KANTER

Robert M. Kanter, O.D., (87) died at his home on Wednesday, May 7, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer. He practiced optometry in Duluth and Two Harbors from 1948 until his retirement in 1989. Born in Minneapolis in 1916 to Bess and Lou Kanter, he moved to Duluth in 1922, attending elementary school and graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1934. He attended Duluth Jr. College and graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1939, before being commissioned and serving in the Naval Medical Corps, 1942-46. As a member of the Naval Reserve, he was one of the first 12 optometrists commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander. He was an Eagle Scout, an Assistant Scout Master of Troop 12, and started Scout Troup 98 (American Legion Sponsor). He was a lover of theater and a supporter of the UMD Theater Department and of the Duluth Playhouse, as an actor in two productions and as a Board member (1962-67) and President (1967-69). He was a lifelong member of Temple Israel, active as a Planning Committee member for the Duluth Heritage and Arts Center, a loyal supporter of anything related to UMD, an avid stamp collector for seven decades, a backer of the Women's Health Center and Building for Women, a member of the Minnesota Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association (1946-1989), a 25year member of the Philatelic Society, and a member of Northland Country Club. He worked hard and well, loved a good laugh and a good play, a lively political discussion, a great hobby, good friends and his family.

He is survived by and will be missed forever by his wife of 55 years, Hommey, and his children, Claudia, Douglas (Cindy), and Jeffry, and grandchildren Daniel and Jonathan, all of Minneapolis, and sister, Jackie Hoberman (Ben), of Los Angeles.

SERVICES: Were held 10 a.m. Friday ] May 9, 2003, at Temple Israel, 1602 East 2nd Street. Memorials preferred to Temple Israel 1602 E. 2nd St, Duluth, MN 55812, the UMD Theater Department 141 MPAC, 1215 Ordean Court, Duluth, MN 55812 or St. Luke's Hospice Home Care, c/o St. Luke's Foundation 915 E. 1st Street Duluth, MN 55805. Burial in Temple Emmanuel Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E. 2nd Street.
